Verse 5:89 from Surah Al-Ma'idah explaining the importance and consequences of breaking oaths in Islam

Surat Al-Ma'idah 5:89 - Expiration for Breaking the Oaths

Surah Al-Ma'idah [5:89] talks about oaths and what happens if you break them. It says Allah won't blame you for oaths that don't mean much. But if you break an important oath, you have to make it right.

Why Oaths Matter:

This verse tells us that keeping promises is a big deal in Islam. If you break an oath, you have to fix it by either feeding ten needy people, giving them clothes, or freeing a slave. If you can't do any of these, you must fast for three days.

Practical Steps for Oaths

  1. Understand the Importance: Know that breaking an oath is serious.

  2. Make Amends: Follow the rules to fix a broken oath.

  3. Seek Forgiveness: Ask Allah to forgive you.

  4. Be Mindful: Think before you make an oath.

  5. Get Advice: Talk to people who know more about Islam if you're confused.

Types of Oaths

Not all oaths are the same. Some are more important, especially those made in the name of Allah. Oaths made without proper intention or when you're angry don't count.

What Other Verses Say

Other verses like Surah Al-Baqarah [2:225] and Surah An-Nahl [16:91] also talk about oaths. They remind us to be honest and fair.

Why Breaking Oaths is Bad

  1. It's a Sin: You have to make it right.

  2. People Won't Trust You: It could hurt your reputation.

  3. You Could Lose Allah's Blessings: It's against Allah's rules.

Vow vs Oath

An oath is a promise you make with words like "By Allah." A vow is a promise to do something good if something specific happens. Both are important but in different ways.
