The simpler patterns utilized by ancient civilizations, including Greek, Roman, and Sasanian, are the origin of Islamic geometric motifs. They are one of three types of Islamic design, along with Islamic calligraphy and an arabesque based on wavy and branching plant patterns. All three are frequently combined.
